2010 AGR Leadership Conference

February 14, 2010 News by Kelvin Moreno

This year I had the opportunity to travel to Kansas City along with members of the executive team and a few committee chairmen for the 2010 AGR Leadership Conference titled. “6 Degrees of Me” exposed ten of us brothers, including Mama Nita, to various concepts, programs and information designed to increase the quality of our chapter. It was especially exciting for some of our brothers traveling to Kansas City as first timers and who were able to experience snow for the first time.

During the leadership seminar, we learned about various leadership concepts and practices. During the leadership session we learned the first degree of Leadership is “Visioneering”. In order to grasp the importance of this concept, we were encouraged to think about issues important to us and things we enjoy doing, care about, and would regret never doing, seeing or achieving. We each wrote a vision statement for ourselves. We all took away a lesson from this session: you must envision where you want to go in life in order to know how to set the right goals that will lead you there.

Followed by Down to the Core
“Are You Communicating?” was facilitated by brother Micah Scanga. During this session we worked through a Communication Style Inventory. The inventory illustrated the four styles of communication (you should list them here), their differences and how to effectively navigate through them.

A Best Practices Breakfast
Brother Micah Scanga led us through a discussion of Covey’s Matrix of Time Management in which he identified the distinction between items in life that are urgent/important, urgent/unimportant, non-urgent/important, and non-urgent/unimportant. Covey encourages us to stay in the not urgent/important quadrant because when items become urgent and important they often refer to a crisis.

Do You Measure Up
Facebook has revolutionized the way people communicate in all sectors of daily lives. It has definitely changed the way AGR communicates with faculty, staff, AGR brothers, Sigma Alpha, campus organizations, potential donors, alumni, parents, Ag organizations, and civic organizations. Social media has taught us to communicate frequently, offers rewards, allows us to coordinate special events, facilitates two-way communication and increases our opportunity to access donor-alumni relations and secure field experiences with industry tours and volunteer opportunities.

One-on-One
The conference also provided us with the opportunity to participate in an agricultural issues discussion panel which centered on the effects of ethanol production and its role in the nation’s food market.

Recruitment Academy
During the conference, brothers Jamie Fussell and DJ McElroy attended the Recruitment Academy. The academy reviewed the basics to effective recruitment which relies heavily on forming a master list of potential brothers from various sources early in the process. They learned the benefits of forming small groups, and building relationships with potential brothers as well as methods to increase chapter participation. We are excited to bring this information back and implement it into our chapter’s recruiting program!

Undoubtedly, this was a phenomenal and educational trip. We learned various techniques and methods that will help us increase our management effectiveness, which will in turn increase the quality of our chapter. We were especially thankful to be given the opportunity to meet with various AGR brothers from chapters across the country to network, exchange stories, experiences and advice. We feel the information we gathered in this conference will cross apply successfully and increase the quality of our chapter!
